Estudió Antropología Social en la Universidad de St Andrews, Escocia y en el William & Mary College, Virginia. Su primer trabajo fue como becaria de gestión en Reuters, en Londres y Escandinavia, peros sueño era ser una verdadera periodista de noticias, escribiendo sobre la vida de la gente en momentos dramáticos y traumáticos. Así que se fue a estudiar periodismo para obtener un diploma de tres meses en el London College of Printing. Pasó 12 años en Hong Kong escribiendo para The Hong Kong Standard, RTHK (brevemente) y, finalmente, The South China Morning Post, como reportera de noticias y luego como editora de arte. Los últimos años ha trabajado en programas de desarrollo con su marido, a través de su organización benéfica, ARC. Da charlas y escribe para varias publicaciones, como Orion, Apollo, The Independent, The Smithsonian Magazine y The South China Morning Post.
