Dark Claim
A Fated-Mates Paranormal Romance with Forbidden Power
Sinopsis
Sabine Sterling has quiet blood.
That is what they call it when the power runs deep and still, when no moonfire leaps from the palms on cue, when the magic does not perform itself for council approval. Quiet blood. As if the word kind could undo the word insufficient. As if seven years of being the chosen one, the promised bride, the carefully maintained contractual arrangement between two houses had been comfort rather than a sentence she was expected to accept with grace.
She accepted it.
She prepared. She practiced vow responses. She stood in dress fittings. She told herself tenderness could be built from duty and that duty, honestly honored, was its own kind of love.
The binding water warmed for her before the ceremony.
Only for a breath. Only long enough for the silver bowl to tremble on its pedestal. But it warmed, and it had never lied before, and High Binder Selwyn saw it and said nothing.
Then Kael Draven walked down the aisle in the wrong coat and her sister stepped forward in sleeves already threaded with binding silver, moving too quickly for a woman who should have been surprised, and Sabine understood that something had moved through council chambers and family rooms and private bargains while she stood obediently in the ceremony she had been preparing herself to honor.
She was escorted across the Blackwater before she could name it.
Nightvales border guard arrives with a water flask and the specific, disciplined stillness of a man who does not perform his authority. He does not press the flask into her hand. He offers it and waits. That small distinction the space between offering and imposing is who Ronan Vale is, and Sabine notices it immediately, and notices that she notices, and puts it aside because she is in exile in a foreign court and has more immediate problems.
Then the dark claim activates.
Not during a ceremony. Not under deliberate moonlight. During a border attack, in rain and mud and the specific violence of two people defending the same ground without asking each others permission. The Veilwells old magic, ancient and without council language to dress it in, burns through both of them simultaneously. It does not grant him authority over her. It does not grant her patience with him. It burns every time either of them tries to turn care into command, every time protection pretends to be consent, every time warmth crosses the line into possession.
It is, in other words, the most honest thing that has ever been placed in her body.
She still does not want it.
Because the bond carries truth both ways, and what it carries from Kael Dravens Silverfang hold is something that should not have been possible under sacred ceremony. A false bond over Isoldes throat. Children with forced mate-marks bleeding in quiet cells. A registry of names hidden in the hollow of old Silverfang law. High Binder Selwyns rings still warm from ceremony they were never meant to witness.
The dark claim cannot be voided. It cannot be decorated. It cannot be argued into a political convenience by people who profit from women accepting arrangements as fate. What it can be what Sabine discovers in a Veilborn elders broken teaching chapel with mismatched chairs and old roots through the floor — is a scalpel.
Not a hammer.
