Forced by her parents to attend law school, Roxanne decides to pursue her lifelong passion for painting after graduating. She paints in her spare time and works as a sales assistant. She escapes from her familys lifestyle and her snobbish mother, who does not accept her mediocre choices, and goes to live alone, with only her beloved goldfish for company. She has been in a relationship with Derek for five years, which she has never questioned despite the distance and lack of attention. However, everything is called into question when, in order to make ends meet, she decides to put her studies into practice and give afternoon tutoring lessons.
