Sinopsis
An analysis of the historical and urban evolution of Colonia Augusta Emerita (modern-day Mérida) reveals its pivotal role as a primary administrative, religious, and cultural center within Roman Hispania. Founded under Augustus following the Cantabrian Wars, the colony developed into the capital of Lusitania and, subsequently, the seat of the Dioecesis Hispaniarum. Archaeological evidence—spanning monumental civic architecture, complex hydraulic networks, suburban domus, and extensive necropoleis—demonstrates a sophisticated urban grid and continuous structural adaptation from the Augustan period through Late Antiquity. Through the synthesis of historiographical records, epigraphic sources, and contemporary urban excavations, the text reconstructs the spatial trajectory of its official forums, entertainment complexes, and defensive systems. The findings highlight the citys status as a simulacrum Romae and illustrate how strategic heritage management continues to advance the understanding of provincial Roman urbanism.
