Nodes of Belief
Information, Power, and Humanity's Long Struggle to Control What the World Knows
Sinopsis
The first axis of this history is bureaucratic. Written language did not emerge as a tool of poetry or philosophy. It emerged as an instrument of inventory, taxation, and command — a way for early states to extend administrative reach beyond the physical limits of any single rulers voice. The printing press accelerated this dynamic rather than dissolving it, placing the power to manufacture consensus within reach of those who could afford the press, not necessarily those who possessed the truth. What each successive information technology shared was a structural tendency: networks that served the coherence of large human groups did so by privileging social order over factual accuracy. Myth, doctrine, and ideology were not failures of these systems. They were, in a very precise sense, their products.
The second axis is sociological.
