The Russian Civil War was one of the most dramatic and transformative conflicts of the twentieth century. Emerging from the chaos of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the war pitted the Bolsheviks—determined to build a new socialist state—against a diverse coalition of anti-Bolshevik forces known collectively as the Whites.
