At Grimhollow Station, telegraph operator Clemency Proude has made a profession of hearing what others miss. A hesitation between signals. An unfamiliar rhythm on the wire. The tiny mistakes that betray the identity of an operator who would rather remain unknown.

Then a diplomatic courier arrives dying at the secret underground station—and Clemency realizes she has already heard him transmit an impossible message.

Diplomatic cryptographer Lucius Harcourt Wren is sent to Grimhollow to discover how.

Precise, restrained, and infuriatingly difficult to deceive, Lucius can remember written sequences almost perfectly. But while Clemency trusts instinct and sound, he trusts systems, proof, and carefully controlled information. Working together is immediately contentious.

Ignoring one another becomes considerably harder.

Their investigation leads to Project Mnemosyne: an experimental machine capable of measuring the bodys involuntary reactions to names, voices, symbols, and places. It cannot read a persons memories—but in the right hands, it may reveal enough to reconstruct secrets without confession.

And diplomatic couriers are already dying because of it.

As Clemency and Lucius follow coded transmissions through Grimhollows forbidden passages, their rivalry becomes fascination, and fascination becomes something far more dangerous. Both have built their lives around keeping secrets. Neither is prepared for the intimacy of being truly recognized.

But the deeper they investigate Mnemosyne, the clearer it becomes that the machine is only part of the mystery.

Its electrical architecture connects to hidden conduits beneath Grimhollow Station—conduits that should not exist.

Someone has been experimenting beneath London for far longer than anyone imagined.

And when Clemency becomes the only person capable of deceiving the machine, stopping Mnemosyne may require her to surrender herself to the very apparatus designed to expose everything she knows.
