Mary McCarthy (1912-1989) es una de las escritoras norteamericanas más relevantes del siglo xx. Fue miembro del Instituto Nacional de las Artes y las Letras y de la Academia Americana en Roma. Cultivó diversos géneros literarios, como la novela, el cuento, la crítica periodística y el ensayo con un estilo que mezcla lo ficcional con lo autobiográfico. Entre sus obras cabe destacar The Company She Keeps (1942), Arboledas universitarias (1952), Una vida encantada (1955), Venecia observada (1956), Piedras de Florencia (1959), El grupo (1963), que se mantuvo dos años en la lista de los más vendidos del New York Times, Al contrario (1961), Pájaros de América (1971), Escrito en la pared. Otros ensayos literarios (1972), Retratos de Watergate (1974), Caníbales y misioneros (1979) y How I Grew (1987). La profunda amistad epistolar que mantuvo con la filósofa Hannah Arendt se encuentra publicada en el libro Entre amigas. Correspondencia entre Hannah Arendt y Mary McCarthy 1949-1975 (Lumen, 1998). Memorias de una joven católica (1957) es su obra autobiográfica más aclamada por la crítica y los lectores.
