Ellen Alpsten nació y creció en Kenia. Luego se trasladó a París para estudiar en L'Institut d'Études Politiques, donde ganó un concurso de cuentos que le animó a seguir escribiendo. Tras graduarse, trabajó como productora y presentadora de Bloomberg TV en Londres, y actualmente colabora con publicaciones internacionales como Vogue, Standpoint y Conde Nast Traveler. La zarina es su primera novela.
