They left the cabin on a morning that looked ordinary.

No storm. No headlights on the spur. Only the quiet they had fought to hold, packed into two bags and the space between them in the truck.

New walls. Different windows. A bed that did not carry the memory of rain against the roof. They learned the shape of each others sleep in a place that had no history with either of them. They touched like people who still could not quite believe the night on the porch had ended without more blood. And every morning Calder checked the same three news sites for the names that were supposed to surface, while Lena checked the locks even though the door was never forced.

The quiet they carried with them was not the same quiet the cabin had given.
