Before he became Commissioner, before Scotland Yard, before everything: young Arthur Wimbledon leaves London for a study exchange at the Egyptian Museum in Turin. There he meets Silvia Ferretti, a brilliant and enigmatic Italian Egyptologist, and together they uncover a photograph that should not exist — dated twenty years before the expedition that took it. Amid the arcades of nineteenth-century Turin, the bicerin, the Mole Antonelliana and the fog of the Po, the greatest love of Arthurs life begins — and the first, quiet thread of a mystery opens, one that will run through thirty-two years and seven novels, to its final revelation.
