When Bartleby comes to work for an elderly Manhattan lawyer he seems to be a great addition to the company. One day Bartleby is asked to help check a document and he replies calmly: “I would prefer not to”. This, to the dismay of his employer, soon becomes his response to all requests and he gradually stops working completely, spending his days looking out at the brick wall three feet away.
