JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER

James McNeill Whistler (18341903), the American-born artist who spent much of his working life in London, played a crucial role in the development of 20th-century modernism. His art was profoundly influenced by the written word, especially the writings of Baudelaire, Swinburne, Mallarmi, and Edgar Allan Poe.
