R. Scott Bakker nació en Ontario en 1967. En 1986 fue a estudiar a la Universidad de Ontario occidental, donde se licenció en Filología. Al terminar un curso de posgrado sobre Teoría y Crítica, se trasladó a Nashville (Tennessee) para hacer el doctorado en filosofía en la Universidad Vanderbilt. Al principio se tomó la escritura como un hobby, pero envió "En el principio fue la oscuridad", primer volumen de la trilogía Príncipe de Nada, a un agente literario, se publicó y cosechó un gran éxito.
