Cake Walk - 2nd Edition
A Novel
Sinopsis
"Im putting Cake Walk on my "Staff Picks" shelf. Not because its easy. Because its honest. And because some kid needs to know that the father in this book eventually chooses love. That hope matters." ~ Ivy, Goodreads Reviewer, 5 stars
"Douglas Bell exposes societal prejudice, homophobia and transphobia in a powerful manner and makes readers think about and reconsider their own attitudes. This book definitely deserves 5 stars!"~ Almiria, Goodreads Review, 5 stars
"I was Nadia for two years. The secret dates. The "friend" introductions. The way my partner would hold my hand in the car but drop it the second we parked. Reading her finally say "I love you but I wont disappear for you" made me sob in a coffee shop. This book didnt just inspire me. It gave me back a piece of dignity Id forgotten I deserved. Thank you, Douglas Bell."~ Angela Melissa, Goodreads Reviewer, 5 stars.
You did everything right.
You learned the rules, worked hard, stayed composed, and built a life that earned respect. You became the person everyone expected you to be. Because in a world that doesnt always make room for you, belonging can feel like survival.
But what if the life you built no longer feels like your own?
Bryan Hicks knows that feeling. A successful Black executive in Houstons oil and gas industry, he has spent decades mastering control, conformity, and the performance of heterosexual masculinity. Then he meets Nadia—a confident transgender woman who lives openly and unapologetically.
Falling in love with her forces Bryan to confront questions hes spent a lifetime avoiding. Is he betraying the community that shaped him? Or discovering a deeper truth about who he has always been?
Through love, meditation, and Buddhist wisdom, Bryan begins a journey beyond shame, fear, and expectation toward a life lived honestly. What follows is a new kind of coming-out story—one that asks whether coming out is not about becoming someone else, but finally embracing the person you have always been.
As you read, your own experience is mirrored—the pressure to perform, the longing to belong, the fear of being seen, and the courage it takes to become yourself.
Cake Walk (2nd Edition) is a groundbreaking queer literary novel exploring cis-trans romance, queer identity, community, spiritual awakening, and the transformative power of living your truth.
Why I Wrote Cake Walk
I wrote Cake Walk because I couldnt find stories about a Black man loving a transgender woman. Inspired by my 25-year meditation practice and therapy, the novel explores choosing the unknown over fear and asks whether some trans-attracted men may discover their sexuality is more flexible than they believed. My hope is to inspire liberation, belonging, and the courage to live truthfully.
