Thoughtful, tender storytelling at its finest Marie Claire
A stunning novel Kamila Shamsie
In the hills of Darjeeling, a landslide cuts off a crumbling hotel. Inside, two men exchange lingering glances. For Neville, a bored guest, it is just another passing flirtation; for employee Pavan, their walks in the forest and a stolen room key become an intoxicating first encounter with desire.
Years later, they meet again. Pavan has fled to Mumbai, finding refuge in the anonymity of the city. When Neville reappears - charming at first, then threatening - long-buried secrets from their time together surface.
Rich in atmosphere and elegantly wry, this is a story of forbidden longing and the fragile hope of a life beyond concealment.Intelligent, keenly observed Tash Aw, TLS
