Sinopsis

The Malay Annals, also known as the Sejarah Melayu, is a foundational work of Malay historiography, tracing the legendary and dynastic origins of the Malay people from the descent of kings to the rise and splendor of the Malacca Sultanate. Blending genealogy, court anecdote, epic romance, political counsel, and accounts of warfare and diplomacy, it resists the modern separation of myth from history. Its ornate prose, exemplary narratives, and concern with loyalty, sovereignty, and the reciprocal obligations of ruler and subject place it within the literary tradition of premodern Southeast Asian court chronicles. The text survives in multiple recensions, reflecting a long process of transmission and adaptation. Although its author is formally anonymous, the work is traditionally associated with Tun Sri Lanang, the seventeenth-century bendahara (chief minister) of Johor, who is believed to have edited or compiled an important recension. Written amid the political transformations that followed Malaccas Portuguese conquest, the Annals preserve memories of a displaced courtly world while articulating ideals of Malay kingship and communal identity. Their narratives also reveal how Islamic, Indic, and indigenous traditions were woven together in the regions historical imagination. This volume is essential for readers interested in Southeast Asian history, Malay literature, Islamic kingship, and the uses of memory in political culture. It should be read both as a compelling narrative and as a sophisticated cultural document whose silences, embellishments, and layered traditions invite careful scholarly interpretation.
