No episode captures this more starkly than the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny of February 1946 — when over 10,000 Indian sailors across 78 ships and shore establishments from Bombay to Calcutta rose simultaneously against British command. Their demands were both practical and political: better food, an end to racial humiliation, and the release of political prisoners. British authorities assembled warships, deployed Royal Marines, and threatened destruction of the entire fleet — yet in British circles, confidence in imperial loyalty was irreparably shattered. The mutiny is now widely regarded as one of the final blows to British rule in India, accelerating independence within eighteen months.
