The Ration Line
The Ash Commonwealth
Sinopsis
Stonegate has food for weeks, water for days, and trust for less than either.
By the second month after the EMP, Daniel Mercer has turned household counts into a ration line. Every card promises fairness. Every private cupboard threatens it. Prepared families resist compulsory inventories, hungry neighbors demand seizures, and armed volunteers are eager to decide who deserves protection.
Then an unverified pill reaches a critically ill teenager. Its packaging resembles medicine missing from a Midway clinic transfer, and the trail runs through Stonegates informal barter market. Suspicion settles on a prepared household that refuses inspection, turning one medical emergency into a test of property, evidence, and public anger.
Daniel authorizes limited searches, convinced that written procedure can restrain fear. Instead, each search makes accusation more valuable and privacy more suspicious. The evidence begins pointing toward a secret inside his own family. Exposing it could preserve the equal rules he publicly defends. Concealing it could protect someone he loves while innocent newcomers absorb the blame.
As the first hard freezes threaten food and sanitation, Stonegate must decide whether to remain a collection of private households or create a government strong enough to compel obedience. Daniel will help write its rules. First, he must decide whether they apply to him.
