The Third Shift

At Blackthorn Care Home, the night shift has always been quiet, predictable, and mostly forgotten by the world outside. But when a small group of staff begin noticing impossible changes during the early hours, the routines they trust start to unravel. Residents who should be asleep are found in the wrong rooms. Familiar faces speak with unfamiliar voices. And certain patients seem to be "replaced" by something that looks human, behaves human, and learns how to pass as human with terrifying speed.

When Hannah Reeves takes on another ordinary night in the west wing, she expects exhaustion, paperwork, and the usual strain of caring for people who need more than the building can comfortably give. Instead, she finds a care home hiding a nightmare beneath its fluorescent lights and locked doors. Every answer leads deeper into the buildings past, where old records, missing staff, and buried experiments suggest that Blackthorn has been involved in something far more sinister than anyone imagined.

As the third shift stretches into a battle for identity, Hannah and the remaining night staff must decide whether to trust what they see, what they remember, or what the building is trying to make them believe. But in a place where people can be copied, reassigned, and filed away like paperwork, the most dangerous question is not who is missing.

It is who has already been replaced.

Tense, atmospheric, and deeply unsettling, The Third Shift is a workplace horror novel set in the shadowed corridors of a British care home, where routine becomes ritual, care becomes control, and the night shift becomes a fight to stay human. Perfect for readers who enjoy psychological horror, slow-burn dread, uncanny doubles, and stories where ordinary institutions hide extraordinary terror.
