The book picks up in 1978 when he finished college by which time he was a hardcore heroin addict. Initially, a street drug dealer, he had brushes with the law but managed to stay out of prison until 1980, when he was convicted of multiple armed robberies. He was charged with 32 stick-ups. He robbed primarily pharmacies. In a twelve year period from 1980-1992 he spent nine years in various prisons. He details prison life like no author before him.
