Gran conocedor de la cultura tibetana y maestro del budismo y de la vida, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu nació en el Tíbet oriental, en la región de Derge, y fue reconocido como la reencarnación de un gran maestro de la tradición Dzogchen: Adzam Drugpa (1842-1934). Cuando tenía cinco años, el XVI Karmapa lo reconoció también como una emanación mental de Drug Zhabdrung Rimpoché. Recibió la educación tradicional tibetana en todos los sistemas de práctica budista, incluyendo la transmisión del Dzogchen. En 1960, el gran erudito italiano del budismo tibetano Guisseppe Tucci lo invitó a Europa. Pasó más de 20 años enseñando en el Instituto Orientale de Nápoles. Fundó centros de Dzogchen en todas partes del mundo y escribió numerosos libros, la mayoría de los cuales se han convertido en clásicos. Chögyal Namkhai Norbu recibió muchos premios y honores, tanto en su tierra natal como en el extranjero, por su vasta actividad cultural y su incansable compromiso social. Uno que merece mención especial es la Orden al Mérito de Comendador de la República de Italia, que le otorgó el presidente Sergio Mattarella en 2018. Ese mismo año, falleció serenamente en su residencia italiana en Gadeling.
