Parallel Lives

Plutarchs Parallel Lives is a monumental series of paired biographies in which eminent Greeks and Romans—such as Theseus and Romulus, Alexander and Caesar, Demosthenes and Cicero—are set beside one another for moral and political comparison. Written in elegant, anecdotal Greek prose, the work is less a chronicle of events than an inquiry into character: ambition, virtue, fortune, statesmanship, and failure. Situated between classical historiography, ethical philosophy, and rhetorical portraiture, it helped define biography as a literary form. Plutarch, a Greek intellectual from Chaeronea in Boeotia, lived under Roman rule in the first and early second centuries CE. Educated in philosophy and deeply engaged with civic life, priestly service at Delphi, and the culture of the Roman Empire, he wrote from a position of dual inheritance. His Greek identity and Roman political world encouraged him to interpret the past comparatively, seeking ethical instruction across cultures rather than mere antiquarian record. Parallel Lives is recommended to readers interested in leadership, classical antiquity, moral psychology, and the origins of biographical writing. Its portraits remain compelling because they treat greatness as complex, unstable, and revealingly human.
