Escrito por Roland Barthes

XX. mendeko semiologo garrantzitsuenetako bat izan zen. Haurtzaroa Baionan pasa zuen, 1924an Parisko Montaigne lizeoan ikastera joan zen arte. 1934an tuberkulosiarekin gaixotu eta hamar urtez egon zen erietxeetan. Eztabaidarako eta jakintzarako une erabakigarriak izan ziren erietxe garaiak; besteak beste, Georges Fournié militante trotskista ezagutu zuen, eta Karl Marxen funtsezko lanak irakurtzen hasi zen. CNRSeko (Zientzia ikerketa zentro nazionaleko) ikerlea izan zen 1953-1954an eta, gerora, irakaslea. Besteak beste, Miarritzen, Alexandrian eta Bukaresten irakatsi zuen. Pianoa jo zuen bizitza osoan zehar eta hiru dozena musika pieza konposatu zituen. Kotxe istripu baten ondorioz zendu zen, 1980an, Sorbonako unibertsitatetik gertu. Semiotika estrukturalista eta literatur kritika landu zituen bereziki baina argazkigintzaz, musikaz, arte plastikoez eta zinemaz ere idatzi zuen. Hogei lan baino gehiago argitaratu zituen, tartean Testuaren atsegina/ Idazkuntzaren zero gradua (Klasikoak 1996, Juan Garziak itzulia). Euskaraz irakurgai daude ere Sud-Ouestaren argia eta Frantziako Turra epopeia gisa (Armiarma 2005 eta 2015, Koldo Izagirrek itzuliak).
